Is black grout in my Dubai bathroom dangerous mold?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah Village Circle bathroom has started turning black, especially in the corners of the shower where it's always a bit damp. It's been spreading slowly over the last few months since the weather got really humid. I’m worried it's making my allergies worse, but I'm not sure if this is something I can tackle with a bottle of bleach or if I need to call in a professional cleaning service here in Dubai. How can I tell if this is a serious mold problem that requires an expert?

Black grout in a Dubai bathroom is likely Stachybotrys or Aspergillus, both of which can produce allergens and irritants. The high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use creates a perfect environment for these molds to thrive, especially in a damp shower area.

For a small, surface-level patch, a thorough cleaning with a dedicated mold-removing cleaner (not just bleach, which often only bleaches the color) can be effective. However, if the discoloration has spread significantly, feels slimy, or has penetrated deep into the grout, it indicates a more established colony. This is common when the issue has been growing for months.

Given your allergies are worsening, this is a strong signal to seek a professional assessment. In many cases, the visible mold is just the surface manifestation; the underlying issue could be moisture trapped within the wall or behind the tiles. A proper inspection can identify the moisture source and the mold species, which is key to determining the right remediation approach, as some types require more stringent containment procedures per UAE health and safety guidelines.
