Is black grout mold a DIY fix or professional emergency?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom in Jumeirah has started turning black, and it’s been spreading over the last few weeks. I just pulled a stack of towels out of the linen closet and they had a really damp, earthy smell to them. Given how humid it's been, is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can I tackle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Black grout in a bathroom is a very common sign of mould growth, especially in Dubai's high humidity. The damp smell in your towels confirms there's a persistent moisture issue. This is likely a combination of high ambient humidity and condensation, possibly from your AC system or a hidden leak.

A small, surface-level patch might be treatable with a dedicated grout cleaner, but widespread, recurring black discoloration often indicates a deeper problem. Bleach is not recommended; it only bleaches the surface pigment and does not kill the root structure of the mould, which will likely return within weeks. The moisture may also be wicking up from behind the tiles.

Given the spread and the musty odour permeating other materials, this is beyond a simple surface clean. In many Dubai villas, this points to inadequate bathroom ventilation or a compromised vapour barrier. For a proper fix, the root cause must be identified.

A professional inspection is advised to determine the moisture source. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to check for problems within walls. Reputable companies will provide a lab analysis to confirm the mould type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. Addressing this now can prevent more extensive damage to your property's structure.
