Is black grout mold urgent to fix myself?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom in Jumeirah Village Circle has started turning black, and it’s spreading up the wall near the shower. I first spotted a small patch maybe a month ago, but after the recent humidity, it’s gotten way worse and the room constantly smells damp. How urgent is it to get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a bleach spray?

Black grout mold in a Dubai bathroom is a sign of persistent moisture and should be addressed promptly. The high humidity here, especially after recent weather, creates an ideal environment for mold to thrive. The damp smell confirms active growth, which can worsen allergies and respiratory irritation.

While a bleach spray may remove the surface discoloration, it often fails to address the root cause. Bleach is mostly water, which can soak into the porous grout and feed the mold roots hidden deeper within the material. This leads to a quick recurrence, sometimes within days.

For a small, isolated patch, a thorough DIY approach might work. Use a dedicated mold remover (not plain bleach) and a stiff brush, ensuring the area is completely dry afterward with improved ventilation. However, since you describe it as spreading and there's a constant damp smell, this suggests a more entrenched problem. The moisture could be wicking up from behind the tiles or due to a hidden leak in the plumbing or shower sealant.

In cases of spreading growth and persistent odor, a professional assessment is recommended to identify the moisture source. They can determine if the issue is surface-level or requires remediation behind the walls to prevent structural damage and health concerns, which is a common finding in villas and apartments here.
