Is black mold an urgent health risk for my kids?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing more than usual and I just found a patch of black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some boxes. We live in an older villa in Mirdif, and this wall backs onto the bathroom. I'm trying not to panic, but with the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading. How quickly do I need to get a professional in to handle this, is it a fix-it-this-weekend emergency or can it wait a few days?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the visible presence of black mold, I would classify this as a situation requiring prompt professional attention, likely within the next 48-72 hours. The combination of a child's developing respiratory system, existing coughing, and confirmed mold growth elevates the urgency.
The patch behind the boxes is a visible indicator, but the real concern is the potential for a larger, hidden colony within the interstitial wall cavity, given its location backing onto a bathroom—a classic source of moisture in Dubai villas. The high ambient humidity we experience year-round, combined with constant AC use that can create condensation points within walls, provides an ideal environment for rapid mycotoxin-producing mold proliferation, including species like Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold). While not all black-colored molds are toxigenic, only a professional inspection involving moisture mapping and air/surface sampling can identify the species and the full extent of the contamination. Disturbing it yourself by moving boxes or attempting to clean it can aerosolize spores and mycotoxins, significantly increasing the inhalation exposure risk for your children and potentially spreading the contamination throughout the home. For the health of your family and to properly remediate the source, I strongly recommend you contact a certified professional immediately. Our team at Saniservice is trained to Dubai Municipality standards for environmental health and can conduct a thorough assessment. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. Until then, try to limit your children's access to the room and avoid disturbing the area. |
