Is black mold around windows dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from black mold growing around the windows in their bedroom. We noticed it a few months ago after that period of heavy dew in the mornings, and it’s spread along the seal. I’ve started getting headaches myself and I’m really worried about their health. How dangerous is this, and should I get a professional test done or just clean it myself?

Black mold around windows can pose a health risk, especially for children whose respiratory systems are more sensitive. The symptoms you describe—coughing and headaches—are commonly associated with prolonged exposure to mold spores. In the UAE, this is a frequent issue due to the high humidity and the significant temperature differential between air-conditioned interiors and the hot outdoor air, which causes condensation to form on cooler surfaces like window frames.

This persistent dampness creates the perfect environment for mold to thrive. While not all black discoloration is the toxic Stachybotrys species, any mold growth indicates a moisture problem that needs to be addressed. For a small, visible patch, a thorough DIY cleaning with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution can be effective, but it only solves the surface issue. The mold will almost certainly return unless you correct the underlying condensation problem.

Given that the mold has spread and your family is already experiencing symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the species through lab analysis to determine the specific risk and, more importantly, locate the full extent of the growth and its moisture source. The goal is to resolve the humidity imbalance, often through improved ventilation or dehumidification, to prevent recurrence after a proper remediation. For health concerns, consulting a medical professional is always advised.
