Is black mold behind bathroom tiles dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’ve just spotted patches of black mold creeping out from behind the tiles in our main bathroom. It’s been so humid lately in our Jumeirah villa that the walls never seem to fully dry out, even with the exhaust fan running. What’s the safest and fastest way to get rid of this for good, considering my little ones are always in there?

It can be, yes. The primary risk isn't from the colour itself—"black mould" is a general term—but from the consistent exposure to mould spores in a confined space. For children, whose respiratory systems are still developing, this ongoing exposure can trigger and worsen coughing, wheezing, and allergy symptoms, which aligns with what you're seeing.

The high humidity in Jumeirah creates a perfect environment for mould to thrive behind tiles, especially if there's a hidden leak or insufficient grout sealing. An exhaust fan helps, but it often isn't enough to dry the wall cavity if moisture has penetrated behind the surface.

The fastest and safest approach requires addressing both the visible growth and the hidden moisture source. For a small, surface-level patch, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover can be effective; bleach only lightens the colour without killing the root structure. However, given that it's emerging from behind the tiles, the problem is likely more extensive inside the wall.

For a permanent solution, the tiles and affected backing board may need to be removed to properly remediate the mould colony and allow the structure to dry. This also lets you inspect for and seal any plumbing leaks. With young children present, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent and contain the spores during removal, preventing them from spreading into the home's air. Companies with microbiology lab capabilities can identify the specific mould type to better understand its potential impact.
