Is black mold behind bed dangerous and need professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom has a persistent damp smell, and I've started waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes every morning. I finally pulled the bed away from the wall and found a huge patch of black mold behind it, probably from the AC unit's condensation. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. How dangerous is this for our health and should we get a professional test done, or is cleaning it ourselves enough?

The black mold behind your bed is a health concern, particularly given your symptoms of a stuffy nose and itchy eyes. These are classic signs of mold exposure. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth, this is a common issue. The condensation from your AC unit is the likely moisture source.

For a patch you describe as "huge," professional assessment is strongly recommended. Disturbing it during a DIY cleaning attempt can aerosolize spores and spread them throughout your bedroom, potentially worsening your symptoms and contaminating your HVAC system. A professional inspection will identify the exact moisture source (often a clogged condensate drain line) and the mold species, which is crucial for understanding the risk level and proper remediation method.

While some surface mold can be addressed yourself, the proximity to your sleeping area and the fact it’s been growing for an extended period means the roots may be deep within the wall. A professional will use containment procedures and HEPA filtration to remove it safely. They can also advise on repairs to the AC unit to prevent recurrence. For verifiable results, ensure any company you hire provides before-and-after lab testing to confirm the space has been returned to a healthy state.
