Is black mold behind curtains dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the start of the summer, and I've just discovered patches of black fuzzy stuff behind their bedroom curtains on the wall. The room always feels damp, even with the AC running constantly. Is this black mold, and how dangerous is it for my 4 and 6 year olds to be sleeping in there?

Based on your description, what you are likely seeing is Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly referred to as black mold. It is particularly concerning given the health symptoms in your children and the persistent dampness you've described.

The constant coughing in your 4 and 6 year olds is a significant red flag. Black mold produces mycotoxins that can be especially harmful to young children, whose respiratory systems are still developing. Prolonged exposure can lead to chronic respiratory issues, allergic reactions, persistent coughing, wheezing, and can exacerbate asthma. The dampness behind the curtains is a classic problem in Dubai due to our extreme climate. The constant cycling of high-ambient humidity and cold air conditioning leads to severe condensation on cold surfaces, like walls behind curtains or furniture, creating the perfect breeding ground for toxic mold.

You must take immediate action. Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as improper disturbance will aerosolize the spores and mycotoxins, significantly increasing the airborne concentration your children breathe. The first step is a professional indoor air quality inspection and surface sampling. This will definitively identify the species and concentration of mold, which is critical for planning the correct remediation protocol. In the UAE, remediation must adhere to strict standards to ensure complete spore removal and address the underlying moisture source.

I strongly recommend you contact a certified professional immediately. Please call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection. Your children should avoid the room until the situation has been professionally assessed and resolved.
