Is black mold behind curtains urgent to clean?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled back the curtains in our master bedroom in Jumeirah and found a whole patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind them, probably from the humidity. How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Black mold behind curtains in a Dubai home is a significant concern that warrants prompt, professional attention. The UAE's high humidity, especially in coastal areas like Jumeirah, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in poorly ventilated spaces. The proximity to your sleeping area and your children's persistent cough makes this particularly urgent.

While small surface mold can sometimes be cleaned with a detergent solution, black mold on porous materials like drywall or plaster is not a DIY project. Bleach is ineffective as it only bleaches the surface and does not address the roots (hyphae) penetrating the wall. Disturbing it yourself risks releasing a high concentration of spores into the air, which can exacerbate respiratory issues.

Professional remediation is strongly advised. A certified inspector will first identify the moisture source—often condensation from AC or a minor leak—and contain the area to prevent spore spread. They use specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial treatments to safely remove the contaminated material. Given the health symptoms, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is crucial to confirm the air quality is safe.

For immediate action, keep the children out of the room, ensure good ventilation, and address the humidity. Running a dehumidifier and ensuring your AC is properly maintained to reduce indoor moisture can help prevent recurrence.
