Is black mold behind furniture an urgent health risk?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it after moving the furniture to clean. I’m really worried about their health, but with everything going on, is this something I need to call a professional for immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Based on my experience as a certified mold inspector in Dubai, the presence of black spots behind furniture is a significant concern and should be treated with urgency, especially given your children's symptoms. The persistent cough is a classic indicator of mold spore exposure, which can exacerbate or lead to respiratory issues.

The UAE's climate is a primary catalyst for this issue. Year-round air conditioning creates drastic temperature differentials between cooled rooms and warm walls, leading to condensation—a perfect breeding ground for mold. This is exceptionally common behind large furniture like wardrobes, which restrict airflow and trap moisture.

While the visible spot may seem small, it is often just the "bloom" of a larger colony growing within the wall or behind the skirting board. Disturbing it by cleaning incorrectly can aerosolize a massive number of spores, drastically increasing airborne contamination and health risks.

For these reasons, I strongly recommend against waiting. A professional inspection is not just advised but critical. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air quality pumps to assess the true extent of the contamination and identify the moisture source, which must be rectified to prevent recurrence. DIY cleaning with bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces and does not address the root cause.

For the health of your family, I recommend you contact a professional service immediately.
