Is black mold behind furniture making my kids cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Park. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because of the recent humidity. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray this weekend?

The black spots you've discovered behind the wardrobe in Jumeirah Park are a significant concern, especially given your children's respiratory symptoms. In the UAE's climate, where high humidity and constant air conditioning create ideal conditions for mold growth, this is a common but serious issue. The condensation that forms on cooler walls behind large furniture provides the perfect damp environment for mold spores, including the notorious Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold), to proliferate.

While some minor surface mold can be addressed with a vinegar solution, the situation you describe is not a DIY project for several reasons. First, the location suggests a persistent moisture problem that needs to be diagnosed to prevent recurrence. Second, disturbing the mold without proper containment, such as by wiping it, can aerosolize a high concentration of mycotoxins and spores, drastically worsening the indoor air quality and potentially intensifying health effects like coughing, wheezing, and allergic reactions. A professional inspection is urgent to identify the exact species and the moisture source.

We strongly recommend you contact a certified mold inspector for immediate assessment. Saniservice's specialists use thermal imaging to detect hidden moisture and air sampling to identify spore types and concentrations, all following Dubai Municipality's strict environmental health guidelines. This is crucial for safeguarding your family's health.
