Is black mold behind furniture urgent to remove?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall facing the marina. The humidity has been brutal the last few weeks and we've been running the AC non-stop. How urgent is it that we get this professionally removed, and can we just clean it ourselves with bleach or is that a bad idea?

The presence of black mold behind furniture on an exterior wall is a significant concern, especially given Dubai's high humidity and the constant AC operation you describe. This situation is urgent. The wall is likely a thermal bridge, where the temperature difference between the cool interior and the hot, humid exterior causes condensation to form inside the wall cavity, creating a persistent moisture source perfect for mold growth.
Cleaning it yourself with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. It also introduces excess moisture, potentially exacerbating the problem, and the fumes can be hazardous in an enclosed space. The urgency stems from two factors: potential health implications from prolonged exposure to mold spores and the risk of structural degradation of the building materials. The mold will continue to proliferate if the underlying moisture issue is not identified and resolved. A professional inspection is absolutely necessary. We must conduct a thorough assessment to determine the extent of the infestation inside the wall cavity, identify the precise moisture source, and perform air quality testing to determine spore count levels. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing contaminated materials, treating the underlying cause with industrial dehumidifiers and HVAC cleaning, and finally restoring the area. For a situation like this, immediate action is recommended. Please contact our team for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan.
