Is black mold behind my wardrobe a DIY job?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. It's on the wall and I'm worried it's been there a while. We run the AC constantly but it's a wall that doesn't get any air flow. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from ACE, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional mold removal company, and what would that roughly cost for a single room?

Based on your description, the situation you've described in your Jumeirah residence is a classic case of mold growth driven by Dubai's high humidity and condensation issues, exacerbated by stagnant air behind furniture. The constant AC use lowers the air temperature, but if the wall is an exterior wall, the temperature difference can cause significant condensation, creating the perfect damp environment for mold.

While the urge to use a bleach solution from ACE is common, it is not recommended. Bleach is primarily water, which can feed the mold root structure within the porous wall surface, and its chlorine content evaporates quickly, leaving behind the moisture. More critically, disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize spores, potentially spreading the contamination and increasing your exposure. For any visible growth exceeding a few square feet, professional assessment is strongly advised.

In the UAE, remediation must adhere to strict guidelines like the Abu Dhabi EHSMS and DM's circulars, which mandate proper containment, air scrubbing, and removal protocols to protect occupant health and building integrity. A certified professional from a company like Saniservice would conduct a moisture survey to identify the source, perform air quality testing to ascertain spore levels, and execute a controlled remediation.

Cost for a single room investigation and remediation can vary based on the extent of the growth and required repairs, but you should anticipate a range starting from approximately AED 1,500 to AED 4,000. Given the potential health risks and property damage, a professional inspection is the prudent course of action. For an immediate assessment, I recommend you call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
