Is black mold behind my wardrobe causing kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from a large patch of black mold I just found behind our master bedroom wardrobe. It's the wall that faces the outside of our building in JVC. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this when we moved the furniture to clean. What’s the best way to handle this safely, and should I get a professional or can I DIY it with something from ACE Hardware?

Based on your description, this is a serious situation that requires immediate and professional attention. The large patch of black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum is a common suspect) behind a wardrobe on an exterior wall is a classic symptom of a condensation issue, prevalent in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant air conditioning use. The cold wall from the AC condenses moisture from the humid air, creating a perfect, hidden environment for toxic mold growth. Your children's persistent cough is a significant health indicator that should not be ignored, as mycotoxins from such molds are known respiratory irritants, especially in children.

A DIY approach with store-bought cleaners is strongly discouraged. Bleach or other surface cleaners cannot address the root moisture problem or the hyphae (roots) that penetrate porous materials like drywall and concrete. Disturbing it without proper containment, industrial-grade HEPA filtration, and PPE will aerosolize the spores, significantly increasing the airborne contamination and potential for exposure throughout your home.

The correct course of action is a professional inspection and remediation. UAE regulations and best practices, such as those from DM and Dubai Municipality, dictate specific containment and disposal protocols for fungal growth. A certified expert from a company like Saniservice will first conduct a thorough inspection to identify the moisture source and the full extent of contamination, then execute a safe remediation plan including air scrubbing, antimicrobial treatment, and addressing the underlying condensation issue to prevent recurrence.

For the health of your family, I recommend you contact professionals immediately. Call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment and safe, guaranteed removal. Do not attempt to handle this yourself.
