Is black mold behind my wardrobe making my kids cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Park. It's been so humid lately and I think it's been growing there for a while, hidden behind the furniture. What is the most effective way to get rid of it for good, and should I be calling a professional cleaning company or is this something I can handle myself with products from ACE?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black spots behind the wardrobe and your children's coughing are related. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and year-round air conditioning create ideal conditions for mold growth, particularly in areas with poor air circulation like behind large furniture. The constant condensation from AC units can dampen walls, and when this moisture is trapped, mold colonies develop and release spores into the air. These spores are a known respiratory irritant and can trigger coughing, allergic reactions, and other health issues, especially in children.

Attempting a DIY cleanup with products from a hardware store is not recommended for several reasons. First, without proper testing, you cannot identify the specific mold species, some of which are more hazardous than others. Second, improper cleaning can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination throughout your home and exacerbating the health issues. Third, simply wiping the surface does not address the root cause—the moisture problem—leading to guaranteed regrowth.

The most effective and permanent solution requires a professional approach. We would begin with a certified indoor air quality and surface inspection to identify the species and the full extent of the contamination. This is followed by a remediation protocol that includes containment of the area with negative air pressure, HEPA-filtered air scrubbing to purify the air, and the application of specialized, approved antimicrobial agents to eliminate the colony at its root. Crucially, we then diagnose and rectify the source of the moisture, which is often condensation from AC supply vents or a lack of insulation.

For a thorough and health-conscious resolution, I strongly advise against DIY methods. Contact our team at Saniservice for a professional assessment.
