Is black mold behind sofa an emergency in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. I think it might be from a hidden condensation issue with the AC unit on that wall. With the humidity rising again, I'm worried it's getting worse, but I'm not sure if this is a total emergency or something we can handle ourselves this weekend. How urgent is it to get professional mold removal for something like this in Dubai, and should we be staying out of the room completely?

This situation requires prompt attention but isn't typically an emergency requiring immediate evacuation. The black spots behind your sofa are a classic sign of a condensation issue, a common problem in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC cycling creating temperature differentials on walls.

You should limit use of the room until you assess the extent. Move the sofa away from the wall to allow the area to dry and improve air circulation. For a small, surface-level patch (under 1 square meter), you can clean it yourself with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, the critical step is identifying and fixing the moisture source—likely an AC condensate drain line leak or poor insulation around the unit. Simply cleaning without fixing the leak guarantees it will return.

Given the climate, professional inspection is strongly advised. What you see on the surface is often just a fraction of the growth, as mold can spread inside wall cavities. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the hidden damage and confirm the species. Professional remediation is recommended for any growth over 1 sqm, if it's inside the walls, or if household members are experiencing respiratory issues. They will contain the area, remove contaminated materials properly, and ensure the underlying cause is resolved to prevent recurrence.
