Is black mold behind sofa causing our coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and my own allergies are going crazy. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from a slow leak I didn't know about. We've been sleeping and playing right next to this area. How dangerous is this and what's the first thing I should do to clean it safely?

Black mold exposure is a very likely cause of the persistent coughs and allergy symptoms you're describing, especially given the proximity to your sleeping and living area. The constant moisture from Dubai's high humidity and potential condensation from your AC unit creates an ideal environment for mold growth behind furniture placed against exterior walls.
The first step is to stop the moisture source. Identify and repair the leak immediately. For cleaning, do not attempt to scrub it yourself, as this will aerosolize the spores and can significantly worsen your family's exposure. Isolate the area by closing the door and covering the doorway with plastic sheeting if possible. Due to the size of the infestation and the health symptoms already present, professional remediation is strongly advised. In Dubai, look for a company that follows IICRC S520 standards for mold remediation. They will use containment barriers, HEPA air scrubbers, and proper PPE to remove the contaminated materials safely and prevent cross-contamination to the rest of your apartment. After remediation, a post-clearance test from an independent microbiology lab is the only way to verify the spore count in the air has returned to a normal level. To prevent recurrence, ensure your AC is serviced regularly to manage humidity, keep furniture a few inches away from walls to allow air circulation, and use a dehumidifier if necessary, especially during the more humid winter months. |
