Is black mold behind toilet causing my child's illness?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing behind the toilet where the wall meets the floor. My youngest has been having a runny nose and a cough for a few weeks that won't go away, and I'm starting to worry it's connected. I try to keep the bathroom ventilated, but the humidity just seems to get trapped. How dangerous is this likely to be for our health and should we get a professional to deal with it, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on your description, the presence of black mold (likely Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger) and your child's persistent respiratory symptoms are a significant cause for concern and are likely connected. The area behind the toilet is a classic high-humidity zone where condensation from the tank and minor, unnoticed leaks from the seal (wax ring) create a persistent moisture source, which is the primary catalyst for mold growth in Dubai's climate.

The combination of high ambient humidity and year-round AC use creates massive condensation issues within building structures. While ventilation helps, it is often insufficient against the constant moisture load. Regarding health, mycotoxins and spores from these molds are known irritants and allergens, particularly dangerous for children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems, often manifesting as chronic runny noses, coughs, and sinusitis.

I strongly advise against using bleach. It is largely ineffective on porous surfaces like grout and drywall, as it only bleaches the surface pigment and does not address the root hyphae deep within the material. More critically, improper application can aerosolize spores and toxic compounds, drastically increasing exposure and inhalation risk.

This situation warrants a professional inspection. We would conduct a visual assessment and air quality testing to identify the exact species and spore count, which is crucial for determining the remediation protocol as per UAE health and safety guidelines. The remediation process involves containment, HEPA filtration, specialized antimicrobial treatment, and addressing the underlying moisture source—in this case, likely the toilet seal and possibly wall condensation.
