Is black mold behind wardrobe a serious issue in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s on the wall facing the outside, and it’s been getting bigger since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. My husband says we can clean it ourselves, but I’m worried it’s a sign of a bigger problem with the building. How urgently do we need to get a professional mold removal company involved here in Dubai?

Black mold growth behind furniture on an exterior wall is a serious indicator of a condensation or moisture intrusion problem, not just a surface issue. In Dubai's climate, exterior walls are common sites for thermal bridging, where the indoor cold from AC meets the oppressive outdoor heat and humidity, causing significant condensation inside the wall cavity.

This requires professional assessment. The visible patch is likely just a fraction of the total growth, which can extend inside the wall. A proper remediation involves identifying and correcting the source of moisture, such as insufficient insulation or a leak, before any cleaning. Simply wiping the visible spot will not solve the problem, and the mold will return.

For a situation like this, a certified inspector should conduct a moisture mapping survey to assess the wall’s condition. DIY cleaning with bleach or vinegar is not recommended for porous materials like drywall and can aerosolize spores, spreading the problem. Remediation involves containment, safe removal of affected materials, and addressing the root cause to prevent recurrence. The urgency is high, as continued growth can compromise structural elements and indoor air quality.
