Is black mold behind wardrobe causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. I’m tempted to just scrub it with bleach myself, but I’m worried it’s spread inside the wall. Is this a DIY job or do I absolutely need to call in a professional cleaning company?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black mold growth behind the wardrobe is contributing to your children's respiratory symptoms, such as coughing. The climate in Dubai, characterized by high ambient humidity and the constant use of air conditioning, creates ideal conditions for mold, particularly in poorly ventilated areas like behind large furniture. This condensation provides the moisture necessary for spores to colonize.
Attempting to clean it yourself with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only removes the surface discoloration without addressing the root structure (hyphae) deep within the material. Furthermore, scrubbing can inadvertently aerosolize a high concentration of toxic spores, potentially worsening your family's exposure and leading to more severe health issues and cross-contamination throughout your home. Given that the mold has likely been growing for some time and you suspect it may have penetrated the wall cavity, a professional inspection is absolutely necessary. Our certified inspectors use tools like borescopes to assess contamination within wall cavities and air quality tests to determine spore counts in your indoor environment. This is crucial for developing a safe and effective remediation plan that follows UAE industry best practices.
