Is black mold behind wardrobe making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past few weeks, especially after they sleep in their room. I finally pulled their wooden wardrobe away from the wall in our Jumeirah Park villa and found a huge patch of black mold hidden behind it, probably from the last time we had that heavy humidity. I'm really worried this is what's making them sick. How dangerous is this, and should I take them to a doctor immediately or just get the mold cleaned first?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black mold behind the wardrobe is the cause of your children's persistent coughing. The combination of Dubai's high humidity, especially during the summer months, and the lack of air circulation behind large furniture creates a perfect microenvironment for mold growth. This is a common issue in villas throughout Jumeirah Park and other communities.

The type of mold is critical. While many molds are allergens, "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, which can produce mycotoxins and is particularly hazardous to respiratory health, especially in children. The symptoms you describe—chronic coughing exacerbated after spending time in the contaminated room—are classic indicators of mold exposure.

You should take a two-pronged approach immediately. First, consult a pediatrician to address the health symptoms and rule out other causes. Second, and equally critical, do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold colony without proper containment will aerosolize the spores, significantly increasing the airborne concentration and potentially making the health situation worse.

This requires professional mold remediation. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice are trained to identify the species, assess the extent of the contamination (which often spreads inside wall cavities), and execute a controlled remediation following UAE standards. We use HEPA filtration, antimicrobial treatments, and moisture mapping to identify and resolve the root cause, such as condensation from AC systems, to prevent recurrence.
