Is black mold by AC vent dangerous and urgent?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom has been making this weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and now I’ve just spotted a patch of black speckles on the wall right behind the vent. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and with how humid it’s been lately, I’m starting to get worried. Is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or is it safe to wait until the weekend to deal with it?

That black speckling and damp smell indicate active mould growth, which is common in Dubai's climate due to high humidity and constant AC use. The urgency depends on the extent of the growth inside the unit and wall cavity, which you can't see.

For a small, visible patch, it's likely not an emergency, but it should be addressed within days. The immediate health risk for most adults is irritation—congestion, sneezing, or worsened allergies. However, if anyone in the home is immunocompromised, has asthma, or is an infant, the situation becomes more urgent and a professional assessment is recommended.

In a villa in Jumeirah, the dampness often originates from condensation drain pan overflow or a blocked drain line, which is very common. First, check if the drain line is clear. The mould on the wall is a symptom of excess moisture, so simply wiping it away won't solve the underlying problem.

For a proper resolution, a professional inspection is needed to identify the moisture source, assess the contamination inside the AC unit and ductwork, and perform remediation. This is not a standard AC cleaning; it requires specific techniques to contain the spores. Reputable providers should be able to explain their process and provide before-and-after testing data from a lab to verify the results. Waiting longer allows the mould to spread further into your home's structure.
