Is black mold causing my child's asthma?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s because of the black stuff I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we were rearranging furniture – it’s in a dark corner and the wall feels a bit damp. I’m really worried about their health, especially with my youngest having asthma. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional company here in Dubai?

Black mold (often Stachybotrys chartarum) can be a potent trigger for asthma and allergic reactions, especially in children whose respiratory systems are more sensitive. The persistent cough you describe is a common symptom of mold spore exposure. With a pre-existing asthma condition, your youngest is particularly vulnerable, as the spores can irritate airways and provoke more frequent or severe attacks.

The damp wall behind the wardrobe is the critical issue. In Dubai's climate, this is frequently caused by a combination of high indoor humidity from year-round AC use and a phenomenon known as "cold bridging," where a poorly insulated external wall becomes significantly colder than the room's air, causing condensation to form unseen behind furniture. This creates the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive.

While a small, surface-level patch might be addressed with a dilute bleach solution, your situation requires more caution. Disturbing a larger colony without proper containment can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening the air quality and your children's symptoms. The priority is identifying and stopping the moisture source to prevent immediate regrowth.

For health concerns involving children and asthma, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact moisture cause, assess the extent of the growth (which may be deeper within the wall), and safely execute a controlled remediation. In the UAE, look for providers who can offer post-remediation verification, such as air quality testing, to confirm the environment has been returned to a safe state. This provides documented assurance that the trigger has been removed.
