Is black mold causing my child's rash and stuffy nose?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Al Barsha has had a constant dampness problem since the heavy rains in February, especially in the kids' bedrooms on the ground floor. My youngest has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a weird rash on his neck that won't go away, and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled back the heavy curtain in his room and found a bunch of black spots along the wall behind it. Could this mold be the reason for his symptoms, and what's the first thing I should do to keep my family safe?

Black mold exposure can absolutely cause those symptoms, especially in children. The stuffy nose is a classic reaction to mold spores in the air, and skin rashes are a common inflammatory response to mycotoxins or direct contact. The dampness from the February rains, combined with ground-floor humidity and a curtain trapping moisture against the wall, creates the perfect environment for mold growth in Dubai's climate.

The first thing to do is limit your child's exposure to that room immediately. Keep the door closed and the AC off in that specific room to prevent spores from circulating through the ducts to other parts of the house. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as improper scrubbing can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and make the problem worse.

You need a professional inspection to identify the mold species and the full extent of the problem, which often spreads inside wall cavities. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source of the dampness—it could be a leak, capillary rise from the foundation, or severe condensation. They should also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the type of mold and its concentration. This documented evidence is crucial, especially for landlords if you are renting, as Dubai Municipality regulations hold property owners responsible for providing a habitable environment free of dampness and mold. The lab report will confirm the health risk and guide the proper remediation protocol to safely remove it.
