Is black mold causing my child's runny nose?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has this weird black speckling growing along the bottom of the bedroom wall where it meets the floor. It’s been slowly spreading since the heavy humidity a few weeks ago, and my youngest son has been having a persistent runny nose that just won’t clear up. How urgently do I need to get a professional mold remediation company in here, or is this something I can handle myself with a bleach solution this weekend?

Black mold can certainly cause persistent respiratory symptoms like a runny nose, especially in children who are more sensitive. The humidity we've had is a classic trigger for this growth, particularly on exterior walls where condensation can form.

For a villa in Jumeirah, the combination of high outdoor humidity and year-round AC use creates a perfect environment for mold at cold spots, like where the wall meets the floor. A bleach solution is not recommended; it's mostly water and can actually feed the mold root structure behind the surface, causing it to return stronger. More importantly, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your son's symptoms.

Given the symptoms and the spreading growth, a professional inspection is advised. They can identify the moisture source—often a small leak, capillary rise from the slab, or condensation—and take an air or surface sample for a lab culture. This confirms the mold type and its concentration, which is the only way to know the specific health risk and the required remediation scope. In many cases, addressing the underlying moisture issue and properly removing the affected materials is necessary to resolve the problem for good.
