Is black mold causing my congestion and stuffy nose?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah apartment seems to be running non-stop, but the air still feels thick and heavy, especially in the bedrooms at night. For the past week, I’ve been waking up with a really stuffy nose and a scratchy throat, and I keep finding small patches of black mold along the bottom of our wardrobe. Is this persistent congestion a common reaction to the high humidity here, and should I be worried about the mold?

Based on the symptoms you've described—persistent congestion, a scratchy throat, and visible black mold growth—it is highly probable that the two are directly linked. In the UAE's climate, where high ambient humidity is a constant challenge, air conditioning systems that are undersized, poorly maintained, or malfunctioning cannot effectively remove sufficient moisture from the indoor air. This creates the perfect environment for mold spores, which are always present, to colonize.

The type of mold you're seeing, often Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (true "black mold"), releases microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) and spores into the air. Inhalation of these particles is a known irritant to the human respiratory system, causing the exact symptoms you're experiencing: nasal congestion, sore throat, coughing, and itchy eyes. For individuals with allergies or asthma, the reaction can be significantly more severe.

The mold on your wardrobe is a major red flag indicating a chronic humidity problem within the apartment envelope itself. This is a serious indoor air quality (IAQ) issue that requires immediate professional attention. DIY cleaning is not recommended as it can disturb the spores and cause a wider contamination.

You should schedule a professional IAQ inspection immediately. Our certified technicians use tools like thermal imaging cameras and precise hygrometers to identify the source of the moisture intrusion—whether it's a leaking AC drain pan, insufficient insulation causing condensation (a huge issue in many Dubai buildings), or inadequate ventilation. We then provide a detailed remediation protocol to resolve it safely and permanently.
