Is black mold causing my family's constant cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our Sharjah apartment bedroom and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold underneath, probably from a slow leak I didn't know about. How dangerous is this and could it be the reason my family is getting sick all the time?

Black mold under carpets from a slow leak is a significant health concern and is very likely contributing to your family's persistent cough. The constant dampness combined with Dubai's high humidity creates an ideal environment for mold to thrive and release spores into your indoor air. These spores are respiratory irritants, causing symptoms like chronic coughing, congestion, and worsened allergies, especially in children.

For a situation this severe, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible patch is likely just a fraction of the total growth, which may extend into the carpet backing, underlay, and even the subfloor. A certified inspector can assess the full extent of the contamination, identify the mold species (as "black mold" can refer to several types with varying health impacts), and pinpoint the moisture source.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing it will aerosolize a massive amount of spores, potentially making the air quality worse. The carpet and underlay will almost certainly need to be removed and disposed of professionally. The concrete subfloor beneath will then require specialized antimicrobial treatment to ensure the mold does not return.

Focus on verifying the company's methodology. They should use containment barriers, HEPA filtration air scrubbers, and provide documented proof of remediation, ideally with before-and-after lab results. Resolving the moisture leak is the first and most critical step to prevent immediate recurrence.
