Is black mold causing my headaches and damp smell?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and I’ve started getting these awful headaches whenever I’m home. I just spotted a few small black spots near the air vent in the living room. Given how humid it's been, is this something I need to get checked out immediately, or can it wait until next week?

Yes, it very well could be. The damp smell and your headaches are strong indicators of a microbial issue in your AC system. In Dubai's high humidity, AC units are prime locations for mold growth due to constant condensation. The black spots near the vent are a visible sign that growth is likely occurring inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils themselves.

Headaches are a common reaction to inhaling mycotoxins or microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released by active mold colonies. The confined space of an apartment with a central AC system means these particles are continuously recirculated throughout your living area, which explains why your symptoms persist while you're at home.

Given your symptoms and the visible signs, this is not something to delay. A professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use tools like borescopes to visually inspect the internal ducts and coils, and most importantly, they should take air and surface samples for lab analysis. This is critical in Dubai, as not all black discoloration is the more concerning Stachybotrys (black mold); it could be Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which still cause significant irritation but require different remediation approaches. A certified inspector will identify the species and concentration, which dictates the necessary remediation protocol.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or off-the-shelf sprays, as this can agitate the colony and release a much larger cloud of spores into your apartment, potentially worsening your symptoms. The priority is to identify the source and extent of the problem through proper diagnostics.
