Is black mold causing my husband's allergy symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It's been really humid the last few weeks and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes that seem to get better when he goes to the office. Is this likely the cause, and should we be worried enough to see a doctor or just get it cleaned immediately?

Based on the description, it is highly probable that the black mold in your bedroom closet is contributing to your husband's allergic rhinitis symptoms, such as the stuffy nose and itchy eyes. The recent high humidity levels typical of Dubai's climate create an ideal environment for mold proliferation, especially in less ventilated spaces like closets on exterior walls, where condensation can form.

Mold releases microscopic spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air, which are known irritants and allergens. The fact that his symptoms improve when he leaves the contaminated environment is a strong clinical indicator of a building-related illness.

You should be concerned. While surface cleaning with a diluted bleach solution may remove the visible growth, it is a temporary measure. The underlying cause, likely excess moisture from condensation or a potential hidden leak, must be identified and rectified. Furthermore, disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, exacerbating the problem. We strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified technicians use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air/o-tape sampling to identify the moisture source, assess the extent of contamination, and speciate the mold to understand its potential health impacts.

For a definitive diagnosis of his allergies, consulting a physician is also advised.
