Is black mold causing my husband's illness?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our suitcases. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat for the past month, and it’s not getting any better. I’m worried it’s connected. Is this the kind of thing we need to get a professional mold remediation company in Dubai for, or can we handle it ourselves with bleach or vinegar?

The black mold you found could very well be the source of your husband's symptoms. Persistent stuffy nose and sore throat upon waking are common reactions to mold exposure, as spores are inhaled during sleep. The UAE's high humidity, especially with year-round AC use, creates perfect conditions for mold to grow in hidden, poorly ventilated areas like closets.

For a small, visible patch (under one square meter), you can attempt cleaning yourself. However, bleach is not recommended; it is mostly water and can feed mold roots in porous materials, and its fumes are problematic in enclosed spaces. A vinegar solution is more effective at killing the mold. The key is to identify and fix the moisture source—this is often condensation from an AC duct running through the closet or a nearby cold wall.

Given that the symptoms have persisted for a month, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the hidden moisture source that you will likely miss. More importantly, they can conduct air or surface sampling to be analyzed in a microbiology lab to identify the exact species of mold. This is critical because while most household molds cause allergic reactions, some types can produce mycotoxins that lead to more severe health issues. A lab report will confirm if the mold present is the allergenic type commonly found in AC systems or something more concerning, allowing you to make a fully informed decision on the necessary level of remediation.
