Is black mold causing my husband's respiratory symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah. Ever since the heavy rains a couple of months ago, my husband has had a constant stuffy nose and a cough that won't go away, and I'm starting to get worried it's connected. Is this type of mold likely the cause of his persistent respiratory symptoms, and what's the first step we should take to deal with it safely?

It's very possible the mold is contributing to his symptoms. The heavy rains we had can force moisture through exterior villa walls, especially in older construction, creating a perfect environment for mold growth in hidden spaces like closets. Constant exposure to mold spores, particularly while sleeping, commonly causes persistent respiratory irritation, congestion, and a cough that lingers.

The first step is to identify the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this is often condensation from AC units or, as you suspect, rain-driven moisture intrusion. Check for a leaking pipe or AC drain line in the ceiling or wall near that closet. Until you can get it professionally assessed, avoid disturbing the patch, as this will release more spores. Keep the closet door closed and consider using a dehumidifier in the bedroom to lower the ambient humidity.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact extent of the water damage behind the wall, which is almost always larger than the visible patch. They will also take an air sample or a tape lift sample of the mold itself for lab analysis to identify the species. This is a critical step, as while many molds cause allergic reactions, knowing the exact type helps assess the potential health risk and determines the correct remediation protocol.

Proper remediation involves fixing the water leak at its source, removing the contaminated materials (like drywall or insulation), and thoroughly HEPA-vacuuming and cleaning the area. Simply wiping or spraying the visible spot will not address the root problem or the hidden contamination. Once the area is remediated and the moisture issue is permanently resolved, you should see a significant improvement in his symptoms.
