Is black mold causing my kids' constant cough and runny nose?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been having a constant runny nose and cough for the last couple of months, and I just found a bunch of black, fuzzy mold growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Mirdif. I'm really worried this is the cause and that it's been affecting our health. How dangerous is this type of long, black mold and should we see a doctor immediately?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black, fuzzy mold growth behind your wardrobe is contributing to your children's persistent respiratory symptoms like a runny nose and cough. The location on an outside wall in a Mirdif villa is a classic hotspot for condensation mold, which is extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity interacting with our cooler indoor AC environments.

The term "long mold" often refers to mold with significant hyphal growth (the fuzzy filaments), which increases its surface area and its ability to release spores and mycotoxins into your indoor air. While all mold should be treated seriously, the color black is often associated with Stachybotrys chartarum, which is known for producing mycotoxins that can cause more pronounced health effects, especially in children, the elderly, or those with compromised immune systems. Continuous exposure, as you've described over a couple of months, is a significant health concern.

You should absolutely consult with your family doctor or a pediatrician and inform them of the mold discovery. They can evaluate your children and determine if the symptoms are allergy-related or something more. Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as disturbing it will aerosolize a massive amount of spores.

This situation requires immediate professional assessment. In the UAE, proper remediation follows strict guidelines like the DM Code of Construction Practice. We would perform a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the full extent of the problem and the mold species present. Our certified team then contains the area and uses industrial-grade equipment like HEPA scrubbers to safely remove the biofilm and fix the underlying moisture issue.
