Is black mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I just found a bunch of black fuzzy spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It’s on the wall that faces the outside and the room always feels a bit damp. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this now after the recent humid weather. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional company?

Based on your description, it is highly plausible that the mold growth behind your wardrobe is contributing to your children's persistent cough. The black, fuzzy spots are a significant indicator of a fungal colony, and the location on an exterior wall with a persistent damp feeling points directly to a condensation issue, a common problem in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant use of air conditioning, which can create a thermal bridge and cold surface where moisture condenses.

Mold releases microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air as part of its natural lifecycle. Inhalation of these particles is a well-documented irritant to the respiratory system, particularly in children, and can cause symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and nasal congestion. Attempting to clean this with bleach is not recommended. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it does not kill the root structure (hyphae) and can actually aggravate the problem by adding moisture. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening the indoor air quality and your family's exposure.

For a situation like this, especially with health symptoms present, a professional inspection is absolutely warranted. Our certified inspectors use tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source and full extent of the moisture intrusion, which is critical for a permanent solution. Air and surface sampling can then identify the specific type of mold to inform the correct remediation protocol, which goes far beyond simple cleaning to include containment, air scrubbing, and hygienization of the affected area.
