Is black mold causing my kids' cough and allergies?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and their allergies are going crazy, and I just found what looks like black mold spreading along the base of the wall behind the sofa in our villa’s living room. We’re in Jumeirah and the wall feels a bit damp, probably from the humidity. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated for their health?

Based on your description, the situation you've described is a serious indoor environmental health concern that requires immediate professional attention. The presence of visible black mold, combined with a damp wall and the onset of respiratory symptoms in children, is a strong indicator of a compromised indoor environment.

In the UAE's climate, particularly in coastal areas like Jumeirah, high ambient humidity and continuous air conditioning use create ideal conditions for mold growth. Condensation often forms on and within walls, especially behind large furniture like sofas that restrict airflow. The species commonly referred to as "black mold" (often Stachybotrys chartarum) is a toxigenic mold that can produce mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs). These are known irritants and can trigger allergic reactions, asthma exacerbations, and persistent coughing, especially in children whose respiratory systems are more vulnerable.

While a direct causal link between a specific mold and an individual's symptoms requires professional testing to confirm, the temporal association you've described is a major red flag. The dampness indicates an ongoing moisture issue that must be rectified to prevent further proliferation.

For the health of your family, I strongly recommend you do not disturb the mold, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen exposure. You require a certified mold inspection to identify the moisture source, assess the extent of contamination (which is often more widespread than what is visible), and conduct air quality testing to identify the spore types and concentrations.
