Is black mold causing my kids' cough dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been growing in the corners of our master bathroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it spreading behind the toilet after this year's extra humid winter. The smell is really strong first thing in the morning. How dangerous is this for my family and what's the most effective way to get rid of it for good?

Black mold in bathrooms is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity levels, especially after humid winters and with year-round AC use creating condensation. The strong smell you notice is microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs), which along with mold spores, are likely irritating your children's respiratory systems and causing the coughing. While not all black molds are the highly toxic Stachybotrys, any persistent mold growth can trigger allergy-like symptoms, particularly in children.

For effective, permanent removal, surface cleaning with vinegar or specialized mold cleaners is a start, but it often fails to address the root cause if moisture persists. In the UAE climate, the underlying issue is usually inadequate ventilation or hidden condensation. The most critical step is to identify and eliminate the moisture source—this often means improving bathroom ventilation by ensuring your exhaust fan is working properly and runs long enough after showers.

Given the spread and the health symptoms, a professional inspection is recommended to assess if there's hidden growth within walls or under flooring. DIY solutions can aerosolize spores, making the problem worse. Remediation should involve containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to ensure spores are not just spread around. After remediation, a post-test can verify the air quality has returned to safe levels. For rental properties, Dubai Municipality regulations often hold the landlord responsible for fixing structural issues leading to dampness, while tenants are typically responsible for maintenance-related mold.
