Is black mold causing my kids' cough in Jumeirah Park?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Park. It’s on the wall itself and it's been so humid lately. What's the fastest way to get this properly treated and who should I call first, a regular cleaner or a specialized company?

Black mold, or any mold, can certainly cause the symptoms you describe. The persistent humidity in Dubai, combined with the constant cooling from AC units, creates ideal conditions for mold growth on cooler surfaces like walls behind furniture. The cough is likely a reaction to the mold spores in the air.

You should call a specialized mold inspection and remediation company first, not a regular cleaner. A specialist will first conduct a proper inspection to identify the moisture source and the mold species. In many cases, the visible spots are just the tip of the issue, with growth potentially inside the wall cavity. They will use moisture meters and thermal cameras to assess the full extent.

The fastest proper treatment involves a multi-step process: identifying and fixing the moisture leak or condensation issue, containing the area to prevent spore spread, physically removing the contaminated materials, HEPA vacuuming, and air scrubbing. Simply wiping the spots with bleach is ineffective and can aerosolize the spores, making the problem worse. After remediation, a post-test by a third-party lab is the only way to verify the air quality is safe.

Look for a company that is certified (like IICRC) and can provide a clear protocol with before-and-after testing documentation. For a situation involving children's health, this evidence is crucial. In the meantime, improve ventilation in the room and keep the children away from the affected area.
