Is black mold causing my kids' cough in JVC?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Village Circle. It’s been humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. What’s the best way to get rid of it and should I call a professional company or is there a DIY solution I can try first?

Black mold behind furniture in humid climates like JVC is a common trigger for persistent coughing and respiratory irritation in children. The high humidity we experience, combined with condensation from AC units and poor air circulation behind large furniture, creates an ideal environment for mold growth.

For a small, visible patch (under one square meter), a careful DIY approach may suffice. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, scrub the area, and allow it to dry completely. Ensure you fix the source of moisture—this is often condensation from an exterior wall or a small, unnoticed leak. However, if the coughing persists or the mold returns quickly, a DIY clean is likely not addressing the full extent of the problem.

Given your children's symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Mold frequently grows inside wall cavities or under flooring where it's not visible. An expert will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness and can take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species. This is crucial, as not all black mold is the highly toxic Stachybotrys, but other species like Aspergillus can also cause significant health issues. In Dubai, reputable remediation companies follow international standards like IICRC S520 to contain the area, remove contaminated materials safely, and implement solutions to prevent recurrence, such as improving ventilation or installing dehumidifiers. Resolving the underlying moisture issue is the only permanent solution.
