Is black mold causing my kids' cough? Professional needed?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been growing along the bottom of our bedroom wall in our Mirdif villa. It started appearing about two months ago after that really humid spell and now it's spreading behind the wardrobe. I’ve tried wiping it with vinegar, but it just comes back. Is this something I can handle myself with stronger cleaning products, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company?

It's very possible the mold is contributing to your children's cough. The persistent dampness and mold growth create a source of irritants and allergens that commonly trigger respiratory symptoms like coughing, especially in children. While not all black-colored mold is the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys), its presence indicates a moisture problem that needs to be addressed for your family's health.

Given your description, this is a case for a professional. The mold has returned after a DIY attempt and is spreading behind furniture, suggesting a deeper issue within the wall cavity. In Dubai's climate, the root cause is often condensation from AC units, a hidden pipe leak, or moisture wicking up from the foundation due to the high water table in areas like Mirdif. Simply wiping the surface with vinegar or bleach addresses the visible growth but not the underlying moisture source, so it will always return.

A professional inspection will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the water source. The remediation process for this scale involves containment to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the house, safe removal of contaminated materials like the affected drywall, and addressing the humidity or leak issue. For health safety, especially with children involved, this is the recommended course of action. Look for a provider that can offer before-and-after testing to verify the spore count in the air has been effectively reduced.
