Is black mold causing my kids' cough? Urgent?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last couple of weeks and I've just discovered a patch of black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It must have been growing since the humidity spiked a few months ago. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on the symptoms and your discovery, there is a very high probability the black mold is contributing to, if not directly causing, your children's persistent cough. Mold releases microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air, which are potent respiratory irritants, especially for children whose immune systems are still developing. The location in the bedroom closet is particularly concerning as they are exposed for extended periods while sleeping.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. Our year-round AC use creates significant condensation, and when combined with high ambient humidity, it creates perfect conditions for mold growth in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets and behind furniture.

I strongly advise against using bleach. It is ineffective on porous surfaces, only bleaches the visible pigment, and does not address the root hyphae (roots) deep within the wall. More critically, bleaching can agitate the colony, causing a massive release of spores and mycotoxins into the air, potentially worsening your children's symptoms.

This situation requires professional assessment. The visible patch is likely just the "tip of the iceberg," and the growth within the wall cavity could be extensive. A certified inspector will conduct air quality tests to identify the spore types and concentration levels, which is crucial for understanding the health risk and planning the correct remediation protocol, in full compliance with Dubai Municipality's strict indoor environmental standards.

Given the health symptoms, you should treat this as urgent. I recommend you call our specialists immediately for a comprehensive inspection.
