Is black mold causing my kids' coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from black mold. We’ve lived in the same Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the ceiling in the hallway near the AC vent. It’s been getting worse since the humidity started rising a few weeks ago. Could this be causing their constant runny noses and itchy eyes?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black spots near your AC vent are microbial growth, potentially including toxigenic molds like Stachybotrys chartarum (commonly referred to as black mold). The symptoms you describe in your children—persistent coughing, runny noses, and itchy eyes—are classic indicators of exposure to mold spores and mycotoxins, which are aggravated by the UAE's high humidity levels, especially during the recent seasonal shift.

In Dubai's climate, air conditioning systems are a primary catalyst for mold issues. The constant cycling between extreme outdoor heat and cool, conditioned interiors creates significant condensation. If your AC unit's drain line is partially clogged or the drip pan is overflowing, this excess moisture accumulates within the ductwork and ceiling cavities, creating an ideal environment for mold to flourish directly above your living spaces. The spores are then disseminated throughout your villa via the AC system.

A visual identification is insufficient. Professional inspection and testing are critical to determine the species and concentration of spores in your indoor air. We follow UAE Standard 1881:2016 for testing indoor air quality, which provides guidelines for acceptable microbial levels. Remediation is not a DIY task; improper handling can aerosolize a significantly higher number of spores, exacerbating the health risks and contaminating other areas of the home.

For the health of your family, I strongly recommend a certified inspection. Our team at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive assessment, including air and surface sampling, identify the moisture source, and execute a controlled, professional remediation plan.
