Is black mold causing my kids' illness?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and getting headaches for the past month, and I’m starting to panic. I finally pulled out the big storage boxes from the corner of our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold spreading on the wall behind them, probably from last winter’s humidity. Could this be the reason they’re so sick, and what’s the fastest way to deal with this safely?

Visible black mold growth behind stored items is a common issue in Dubai villas due to high humidity and condensation, especially in less-ventilated corners. The symptoms you describe—persistent coughing and headaches—are consistent with mold exposure, particularly in children who are more sensitive.

The fastest and safest approach is to first isolate the area; keep the kids out of the room and avoid disturbing the mold yourself, as this can release more spores. For a growth of this size and given the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will assess the extent of the hidden damage, identify the mold species, and determine if it has spread into the wall cavity, which is common here. DIY cleaning is risky as it often spreads spores and fails to address the root moisture problem.

A proper remediation will involve containment, HEPA-filtered air scrubbing to clean the air, safe removal of contaminated materials, and treatment of the area to prevent regrowth. Crucially, they will also identify and rectify the source of the moisture—often condensation from AC systems or minor, unnoticed leaks. After remediation, a post-clearance test from an independent lab is the only way to verify the space is truly safe again. Given the climate, improving room ventilation and managing humidity are key to preventing its return.
