Is black mold causing my kids' month-long cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage cupboard under the stairs in our Mirdif villa and found a huge patch of black mold spreading on the back wall. The musty smell is overwhelming. Could this mold be the cause of their respiratory issues and how dangerous is it?

Based on your description of a large patch of black mold and a persistent musty odor in your Mirdif villa, it is highly probable that the mold exposure is contributing to, if not directly causing, your children's month-long respiratory issues, specifically the nonstop coughing.

The term "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic species known to produce mycotoxins. When its spores become airborne and are inhaled, they can cause significant irritation to the respiratory tract. Common symptoms in children, who are particularly vulnerable, include chronic coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, and throat irritation. The musty smell you describe is a clear indicator of an active microbial volatile organic compound (MVOC) release, which is associated with these health effects.

The climate in Dubai is a significant contributing factor. The extreme humidity, combined with year-round air conditioning, creates massive condensation issues, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like under-stair cupboards. This environment provides the perfect conditions for mold to flourish on organic materials such as cardboard boxes, clothing, and the building's wall itself.

Given the visible extent of the growth and the severity of your children's symptoms, this is a serious case that requires immediate professional attention. DIY cleaning is not advised for large infestations, as improper disturbance can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and mycotoxins throughout your home's living spaces, exacerbating the health risk.

I strongly recommend you cease use of the area and arrange for a certified mold inspection. Our team at Saniservice conducts comprehensive assessments that include moisture mapping and air quality testing to identify the full extent of the contamination and its root cause. Following UAE health and safety guidelines, we would then execute a controlled remediation plan to safely remove the hazard and implement solutions to prevent recurrence.
