Is black mold causing my kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past month and we can't figure out why. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the storage cupboard under our stairs in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black mold on the back wall, probably from a small leak we didn't notice. I'm panicking that the spores are getting into the air from the AC. What's the first and most important step I should take to get this cleaned up safely for my family?

Based on the symptoms you describe and the visible growth, it is highly probable that the black mold (likely Stachybotrys chartarum) is contributing to your children's persistent cough. Mold releases microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air, which are potent respiratory irritants, especially for children. The fact that this is near an AC intake is a major concern, as the system can distribute these contaminants throughout your home's living spaces.

The first and most critical step is to ISOLATE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY. Do not disturb the mold. Seal the storage cupboard door with plastic sheeting and tape to prevent further spore release into your home. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or other household products, as this will aerosolize the spores and make the situation significantly worse.

Given the scale of the infestation ("huge patch") and the clear health impact, this is not a DIY situation. Professional inspection and remediation are absolutely essential. We are mandated by Dubai Municipality guidelines to follow strict containment and disposal protocols to prevent cross-contamination. A certified inspector will conduct air quality testing to determine spore counts throughout the house, identify the moisture source (that leak must be fixed first), and then execute a controlled remediation using HEPA filtration and industrial-grade antimicrobials.

For your family's safety, please cease use of that AC unit until it can be inspected and cleaned. I strongly recommend you contact a professional environmental service for an emergency assessment.
