Is black mold causing our allergies and what to do?« Back to Previous Page

Our building in Jumeirah Village Circle had some water leakage issues during the heavy rains a couple of months back, and since then, we’ve noticed these small black spots growing along the corner of our bedroom wall. My husband and I have both been waking up with stuffy noses and itchy eyes, and it's only getting worse. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. Could this mold be causing our allergy-like symptoms and what should we do first?

Based on the symptoms you've described—stuffy noses and itchy eyes upon waking—and the presence of black spots following a water leakage event, it is highly probable that the mold growth is the source of your allergic reactions. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant air conditioning use create ideal conditions for mold, such issues are common after water intrusions. The AC system can often spread the mold spores throughout the enclosed space, exacerbating exposure while you sleep.

The first step is absolutely crucial: do not attempt to clean or disturb the growth yourself. Disturbing the colony will aerosolize the spores, significantly increasing your exposure and potentially spreading the contamination to other areas of your home. Your immediate action should be to arrange for a professional indoor environmental inspection.

A certified mold inspector will conduct a comprehensive assessment, which includes moisture mapping with specialized tools like thermal imaging cameras and hygrometers to identify the full extent of the water damage hidden within the wall cavity. They will also perform air and surface sampling to identify the specific genus of mold (e.g., Cladosporium, Aspergillus, or the toxigenic Stachybotrys chartarum, often referred to as "black mold") and determine the spore concentration in your indoor air. This scientific analysis is vital for developing an effective remediation protocol as per UAE standards.

Given the clear correlation between the water event and your health symptoms, we strongly recommend you seek a professional evaluation immediately.
