Is black mold causing our illness in Mirdif?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. I've been waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache for the past couple of weeks, and my wife says her throat is scratchy. The wall feels a bit damp to the touch, and we're in a villa in Mirdif. Could this mold be causing our symptoms and how dangerous is it to just clean it myself with bleach?

The black, speckled mold behind your wardrobe is very likely contributing to your symptoms. The damp wall suggests a moisture issue, and the timing of your stuffy nose, headaches, and scratchy throat aligns with common reactions to mold exposure. In the Dubai climate, this is a frequent problem; high humidity and constant AC use can create cold surfaces where condensation forms, providing the perfect damp environment for mold to grow on walls, especially behind large furniture that restricts airflow.

Cleaning visible mold yourself with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes the surface discoloration but does not address the underlying moisture problem or kill the root structure of the mold, which will almost certainly grow back. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, potentially making your indoor air quality worse and exacerbating your symptoms.

For a situation like this in a villa, a professional inspection is the safest approach. They will identify the exact mold type and, more importantly, locate and diagnose the source of the moisture—whether it's a minor condensation issue, a hidden pipe leak, or seepage from outside. The remediation process involves containing the area, safely removing contaminated materials, and applying professional-grade antimicrobials. Once the root cause is fixed and the area is properly dried, the mold will not return. For your current health concerns, improving ventilation in the room and using a dehumidifier can help reduce ambient moisture levels while you arrange for an assessment.
