Is black mold causing our persistent coughs and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage cupboard under the stairs in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold covering the back wall, probably from a hidden leak. We’ve been breathing this in every time we get something from there. Could this be the cause of their persistent coughs and my headaches, and what’s the safest way to deal with it ourselves?

A hidden mold patch like that is very likely contributing to your family's symptoms. The persistent coughs and headaches are a common reaction to inhaling mold spores, which are now circulating every time the cupboard is opened. In Dubai's climate, a hidden leak combined with humidity creates an ideal environment for rapid mold growth, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like under-stair cupboards.

For a patch of that size and given the health symptoms, professional remediation is strongly advised. Disturbing it yourself can aerosolize a massive number of spores throughout your home's air. The safest immediate step is to seal the area—tape plastic sheeting over the cupboard opening—and stop using it until it's addressed.

A proper inspection will identify the moisture source, which is critical to prevent recurrence. In villas, common causes are condensation from AC ducts running through the space or a leak from plumbing or ground moisture. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing contaminated materials, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. For health verification, post-remediation testing by an independent lab is the standard to confirm the spore count in the air has returned to normal levels.
