Is black mold causing our persistent dry cough« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah. Since discovering it a couple of weeks ago, my husband and I have both had a persistent dry cough that gets worse at night. I'm really worried that it's connected, especially with the humidity lately. What are the potential health risks and should we get it professionally tested or can we handle this ourselves?

It's possible the mold is contributing to your cough. Many species of black-colored mold, like Cladosporium or Stachybotrys, produce irritants that can cause persistent respiratory symptoms, including a dry cough that worsens with prolonged exposure in an enclosed space like a bedroom. The recent high humidity provides the perfect condition for mold to thrive and release more spores.
Given the symptoms and the location on an outside villa wall in Jumeirah, a DIY approach is not advisable. The visible patch is likely just the surface manifestation; the root cause is probably hidden moisture within the wall cavity, possibly from a small leak or, more commonly in Dubai, condensation due to the extreme temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior. Simply wiping the surface will not solve the underlying problem. You should get a professional inspection that includes moisture mapping and, most critically, air and surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab. The lab analysis is the only way to conclusively identify the mold species and its concentration, which determines the appropriate remediation strategy and confirms the health risk. For a case with persistent health symptoms and suspected hidden growth, professional remediation that addresses the moisture source is the recommended course of action. |
