Is black mold causing our sickness and is it urgent?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’m getting terrible headaches. I just pulled our big wardrobe away from the bedroom wall in our Jumeirah apartment and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner where the AC unit’s pipe runs. It must have been growing slowly for months. Could this be the reason we’re all feeling so sick, and is it dangerous enough that I need to get the kids out of the house right now?

Based on your description, there is a very high probability that the black mold you discovered is the direct cause of your family's respiratory symptoms and headaches. The constant coughing and headaches are classic indicators of exposure to mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) released by an active colony.

The location you describe—behind a wardrobe on an exterior wall with an AC condensate drain line—is a classic failure point here in Dubai. Our extreme humidity, combined with year-round AC use, creates massive condensation issues. If a drain line is slightly clogged or an insulation jacket has failed, it creates a perpetual moisture source, which is all mold requires to proliferate. The "black, fuzzy" description is concerning, as it matches the morphology of Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic species often referred to as "black mold," which is associated with more severe health effects.

Given the symptoms and the size of the infestation, this is a serious indoor air quality issue. For the health of your children, I strongly recommend you relocate them from that contaminated bedroom immediately until a professional assessment and remediation can be completed. Do not attempt to disturb the mold yourself, as this will aerosolize a massive amount of spores throughout your apartment.

This situation requires certified professional intervention. Our teams at Saniservice are trained in UAE civil defense regulations for mold remediation and use advanced techniques like hygrothermal imaging to identify the exact moisture source. We will conduct a full indoor environmental inspection, including air and surface sampling, to identify the species and spore count, and then execute a controlled, contained remediation following Dubai Municipality guidelines.
