Is black mold causing our sickness and what to do?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’ve been getting terrible headaches. I finally pulled out the sofa in our living room to look behind it and found a huge patch of black mold on the wall, right where the AC unit is. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this. Could this mold be the reason we're all feeling so sick and what should I do first to deal with it safely?

Black mold exposure can absolutely cause the symptoms you're describing, especially persistent coughing and headaches. In Dubai's humid climate, AC units often create condensation points on walls, leading to mold growth exactly where you found it. The constant air circulation then spreads spores throughout your living space.

Your first step is to isolate the area. Avoid disturbing the mold, as this releases more spores. Move the sofa back to contain it and limit family access to that part of the room. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach yourself; improper methods can aerosolize toxins and make the problem worse.

Given the visible size and your family's health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. In Dubai, remediation should follow standards like the IICRC S520. A proper assessment will identify the moisture source (likely a condensate drain issue or insulation gap from the AC) and the mold species. Some black molds, like Stachybotrys, produce mycotoxins that cause more severe reactions.

Look for a provider that conducts a thorough investigation, not just a surface clean. They should use a moisture meter to find the root cause and recommend fixes to prevent recurrence. After remediation, a third-party clearance test—like an air quality test with lab analysis—is the only way to verify the space is safe. This is critical for rental properties in Jumeirah, as landlords are typically responsible for addressing structural mold issues.
