Is black mold causing our sickness?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler and I have both been waking up with stuffy noses and sore throats for the past couple of weeks, and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled our heavy winter clothes out of the storage cupboard under the stairs to pack for a trip, and the entire back wall is covered in a black, fuzzy mold. The room has no windows and it’s felt damp since the weather changed. Could this mold be the cause of our symptoms and how dangerous is it to have been living right next to it?

Yes, the black mold in your storage cupboard could absolutely be causing your symptoms. The consistent stuffy noses and sore throats upon waking are classic signs of mold exposure, especially in an enclosed, damp space like that. While not all black molds are the highly toxic Stachybotrys, any significant mold growth releases spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that irritate the respiratory tract.

Given the UAE's high humidity, this is a common issue. The recent weather shift increases condensation, particularly in windowless rooms with poor airflow, creating a perfect environment for mold to flourish on organic materials like cotton, leather, and paper in your stored winter clothes.

The proximity to your living space is a serious concern, as air currents from opening the door can carry spores into your home's main areas. For a toddler with a developing respiratory system, this exposure can be particularly aggravating.

You need to address this in two steps. First, stop the moisture source. A dehumidifier is essential for that cupboard; aim to keep humidity below 60%. Second, the existing growth requires professional remediation. Disturbing it yourself risks aerosolizing a high concentration of spores throughout your home. A certified inspector can identify the moisture source, assess the extent, and safely remove the contaminated materials. They should also conduct air quality testing to determine spore levels in your bedroom.

For verification, insist on a company that provides a lab report identifying the mold species and quantifies the spore count, which is the only way to understand the specific risk and confirm the cleanup was effective.
